Not the best day ever.

I've writing from a local motel tonight, we had fire in our house today, so we're out until the insurance people okay our return. We've been having some work done on the house, and today when I was out shopping with my daughter, the workers smelled something amiss and realized that something was burning. The firemen were there in about 8 minutes, but didn't find the fire smouldering in the attic for over an hour, since there are a few attics and they were all filled with smoke. We were really fortunate, the damage is mostly in a bathroom that we were having remodeled, and the attic area above it, where we didn't have much stored. Not sure how much was damaged in the attic yet, and how much smoke damage there is. My sewing room is the room right off that attic, so it's a mess from the firemen tearing out around the attic door so they could fit in there with their gear and stomping around through the mess, and it got a lot of smoke, but it doesn't look too bad, I'll probably be washing a ton of fabric and a few quilts that were up there and getting my Bernina and a computer checked out, boy I hope they didn't get damaged by the smoke.
I'm NOT complaining about the firemen, I know they did what they had to to find the fire, they did a great job (it looks like a ceiling light/vent overheated). Instead of totally soaking the attic, they found out exactly where the fire was and basically drizzed water down over it so there isn't a lot of water damage as far as we know. We'll get a better look tomorrow. There were firemen from four different townships because they kept calling others in when they couldn't locate the fire, it was a bit of a shock to pull up and see so many fire trucks and firemen there, I thought it was going to be a lot worse than it actually was.
I have to tell you a funny story, it's a small town thing. Our neighbor, Jodi, went down to our house when she saw the fire trucks, and talked to the workmen, who weren't able to reach us by phone. Not sure why unless they were using the wrong area code, because none of us ever got a message from them. Anyway, Jodi didn't know our cell phone numbers, so she called the local phone company and asked to talk to another neighbor (Vicky) that works there. Jodi couldn't remember our daughter's new married name, so she asked Vicky if she knew what her last name was so she could try to contact her. Vicky knows my daughter's in-laws, they live right next to the phone company, so she called them and told them about the fire, they called our son-in-law, who called my daughter and I. That sort of cracks me up, even in the midst of all this.....I love small towns.

Get ready......

I know it doesn't look like much now, but soon this will be such a beautiful peony, just give it a few days, you'll see. It's been a chilly spring here in SW Michigan, but today is HOT (by Michigan standards, anyway, by my Mom's Florida standards it would probably be considered mildly warm.). By fortunate coincidence it's also the day my DH got the new air conditioner hooked up, lucky for him, there would have been whining, lots of whining. Anyway, so far the weather is being kind to us for this holiday weekend. We don't have big plans, just hanging around home, lots of cooking out on the grill with our daughter, Taiya and her hubby, Matt and working on the addition, redoing things we've already done once thanks to an inept builder who is no longer working here. I've finally been able to buy some flowers, and even a few tomato plants. I don't know if I'll be able to get anyone to till up the veggie garden, but I'm ever hopeful.

Tree & the letter B

As nice as today was, I should have been working in the garden, but instead I actually got some work done on the tree (it's ALMOST like gardening!). My camera didn't get the colors quite right, but you get the idea. Still have a lot to do, I want to make some leaves overlapping the border, and I'm trying to decide whether I want to machine quilt it, or hand quilt and use embroidery to add more dimension to the tree. And there must be beads....

Anyway, on to the letter Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

BABIES- Wish mine hadn't grown up so fast, or would at least have some of their own.

BACK TO BEDLAM- good album by James BLUNT!Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

BACTERIA- Am I getting more paranoid about it because I'm getting older or because I'm reading more about the bird flu, flesh eating bacteria & etc. ??

BALDERDASH!- Just another word I like.

BALL- Such a simple object, it's amazing how much fun it is, and how different the world would be without it. Just seeing a bin of colorful rubber balls at the store brings a smile to my face.Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

BASSWOOD- A type of wood that I use for carving, which fortunately grows on our property.

BEADS- One of my favorite obsessions next to fabric.Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

BESOTTED- *sigh*Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

BICYCLE- My oldest son's favorite mode of transportation.

BLUEBONNET-So lovely.

BLUEGILL- My Grandpa Pete's passion was fishing, he used to catch a lot of bluegill. He'd clean them right up so we could get them on the grill, and they were soooooo good. He ruined me for fish, they never taste as good to me as his fish did, fresh from the lake.

BOOKISH- A good word to describe my daughter and I.

BUNNY- There's one outside my window right now! I've been seeing a lot of them in the yard this spring. This is not looking good for my veggie garden.

Inspiration &c.

It's a bit nicer here today, still chilly, but we have SUNSHINE. I went on a little nature walk with my dogs, not sure what I was thinking, I'm allergic to the outdoors. I still don't get that, I was born here, how can I be allergic to my own world? We should be in sync with our own planet, don't you think? But I digress, I should introduce you to my dogs....this is Chance.
He's a border collie & has the sweetest spirit of any being on the planet. We got him when he was about 9 months old, he was being abused by his male owner, but once he realized we weren't going to hurt him he calmed right down & has been a great dog. He's getting old, so much to his dismay he can't chase the ball as much as he used to.
Our other dog is Dax, she's a heinz, heavy on the Chow. She's the alpha dog around here, she barks loudly if there's any disturbance and then runs to the door quick so I can let her in before they get too close, ha!
I went to South Haven yesterday, we had a downpour soon after I got there so I didn't have a lot of photo ops, but did get a pic of the lighthouse. If you're ever in this area, it's a nice little town to visit. There's a great restaurant there called Clementine's, though there's quite a wait to get in there in the summer, it's worth it. Around the corner from Clementines there's a huge antique store that I love, and some unique, artsy little shops.

Another Cloudy Day

It's chilly and cloudy today, a bit of sunshine would be welcome. At least it's not raining, the last few days it rained almost non-stop. I'm not sure what this flower is, but it's about the only thing that's blooming in my garden right now, must be a plant that likes wet feet!

My daughter and SIL want to have a vegetable garden here this year, hope we can get that started soon. We won't be able to put any plants in for a couple of weeks, most likely, but I'd love to get it tilled up so I can start imagining those fresh veggies!
I'm actually making some progress here, I don't have a plan for this one, just deciding what to do as it goes along. I'm adding more leaves, trying to decide what embellishments to do, and still trying to decide on the border. After I look at it for a while, it will come to me....... I wish I could say we're making progress on our addition. We had the bathroom pretty much put together & when my husband tried to install the shower doors in the corner shower, it was impossible because the walls aren't straight, thus the shower walls aren't straight!! Arghhhhhhhh! Now the vanity, toilet & shower all have to be taken out, the walls torn out and redone, and probably the ceiling as well, and everything done over. So glad we didn't give the builder the rest of the money, or we'd be in trouble. I hope we never have to build again, at least anything more than we can do by ourselves, all we hear is horror stories about builders. Ah well, it's really frustrating, but it's fixable, so I'm not going to let it make me crazy, life goes on. Hope you're all having a great spring and are inspired by all the beauty around you this time of year!

Shipshewana day! (or Free Manure)

I had such a great day on Wednesday, one of those fun days that you wish didn't have to end. I went to Shipshewana, Indiana with my daughter & her nephew, Charlie. It was a perfect day, sunny and in the 70s, just beautiful (and there was the free manure, that topped it off!).
The waterfall is from a walkway along the front of the Blue Gate restaurant. We had a nice lunch there (they have a wonderful bakery with the best sugar-free chocolate as well as lots of other goodies).
The carousel (shown in an earlier post) is coming along. It looks like it's nearly done. I just love this, can't wait to see it finished. Besides a great variety of horses, there's a pig, and there's also a bulldog. I haven't seen a cow yet....I think they should have a cow. We lucked out, the next day it rained all day long and has been rainy ever since. I soooooo need to mow the lawn this weekend (or start on that ark).

Words from A to ?

Time to start some wordplay, not sure how many letters I'll get through, but here goes....
A is for:

ABLOOM- The lilacs are at this moment.Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

ABNORMALITY- When it comes to people, what is normal anyway?

ACCUMULATION- One of my problems when it comes to fabric & all related items. ADDICTION also applies.

ADDITION- The one being added to our house is driving us crazy, SO glad we didn't build a whole new house.

ADZ- Who came up with this word? Weird, but I like it.

ALL HALLOWS EVE- Used to be one of my favorite eves, back in the old days when a child could go around their own neighborhood without any worries.Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

ANCESTRY- Have spent many hours studying mine, lots of farmers, a tallow chandler and one Colonial Governor.

ANTEDILUVIAN- I just love the sound of the word, it makes me think of Atlantis and the song by Donovan.

ANTS- On my kitchen cupboard, yuck!
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

ANTIQUE STORES- Love to look through them, too cheap to buy much. But I love to see all the junk I have in my barn that is selling for the big bucks!

APPLES- My daughter's dog loves to play catch with them and afterwards finds them a yummy snack! I try to eat one a day to keep you-know-who away.Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

AQUA- My friend's current favorite color.

AROMA- I love how certain smells will bring memories to mind so clearly.

ART- Can't imagine life without it.Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

ASSIMILATE- Resistance is futile.....I'm thinking the Borg would spit us back out, especially if they started with Anna Nichole Smith or Paris Hilton.

ASSOCIATE- If they're working at Wal-mart at the register, lets just be real and call them cashiers. Nobody is being fooled here.

ATTIC- Full of junk, must clean.

AUCTION- Want to get to some of these this year and buy some boxes of stuff!

AZURE- Isn't it a beautiful sounding word? And color as well.

Flutterby & other things...

Hard to tell much difference, but now everything is hand appliqued down, still just getting started. I love the batik fabric for the grass, looks just like I wanted it to, that doesn't happen often enough!

My daughter took this picture with her new digital camera, a Nikon D50. It's really a nice camera and seemingly easy to use, it takes really great pics (and of course there's her photographic talent involved as well!)
Here's a pic my SIL took, this is Dax, she's a chow mix. We also have a border collie, Chance. He's getting old but is still hard to catch holding still.

Proof of progress!

I finally got a chance to get up to my sewing room and start on a project I've been thinking about for a while (yeah!). It's barely started, but since I'm so proud that I actually got up there, I have to post a pic!
~~~~~~~~~We're still plugging along on the addition, and here's my most recent contribution to our new bathroom.
I discovered I really hate tiling, but we're happy with the final result. Guess whose idea the little tile in the middle was? Reminds me a little bit like a quilt if that gives you a hint.
Spring is coming slowly, which is fine with me. I hate it when it gets warm too soon and all the flowers open and fade out too quickly. This is such a great time of year here, the fruit trees are in full flower, flowers are popping up all over, there's incredible beauty around every corner!
